Monday November 21st, Cinema 1999 and Bar Le Ritz PDB present The Saddest Music in the World (2003), a Guy Maddin film! In 35mm!
In Depression-era Winnipeg the "world capital of sorrow", amputee baroness Helen Port-Huntley (Isabella Rosselini) holds a competition to find the saddest music in the world, a publicity stunt to promote her company Muskeg Beer. The prize? $25,000. The occasion? The year is 1933 and prohibition is about to be lifted in the United States. Musicians descend on Winnipeg from around the globe. Competing for the Americans is Chester Kent (Kids in the Hall's Mark McKinney!), a Canadian from Winnipeg without an ounce of sadness in his body, who believes in showmanship! Throw into the mix an amnesiac nymphomaniac girlfriend, familial competition on and off stage, madness, badness, a pair of beer glass prosthetic legs, and you've got one hell of a night out at the movies! Liberally adapted from an original screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro, writer of The Remains of the Day (1989) and Never Let me Go (2005).
35mm screenings cost a little bit more than our other movie nights in order to cover any combination of promotion, print rental/preparation, screening rights and projection services.
